What Does an OPG X-Ray Show?

An OPG (orthopantomogram) is a single panoramic X-ray that shows all your teeth, both jaws, the jaw joints and the surrounding bone in one image. It helps the dentist see things that a regular examination cannot, such as:

  • Impacted or unerupted teeth, including wisdom teeth
  • Bone levels around the teeth in gum disease
  • Infections, cysts or other changes in the jawbone
  • Developing teeth in children
  • The overall position of teeth and roots before orthodontic treatment

When Is an OPG Needed?

  • Planning wisdom tooth removal
  • Planning dental implants
  • Planning braces or aligner treatment
  • Assessing jaw pain or jaw joint problems
  • A full-mouth assessment for a new patient or after an injury

OPG vs RVG (Intraoral Digital X-Ray)

An OPG shows the whole mouth in one image and is ideal for an overview and treatment planning. An RVG is a small digital sensor placed inside the mouth that gives a highly detailed image of one or a few teeth, and is used for diagnosing cavities, checking root canal treatment and assessing individual teeth. Both images appear on a screen within seconds so you can see and understand your own diagnosis.

What to Expect During an OPG

The OPG is quick and painless. You stand or sit in the machine, bite gently on a small guide, and stay still for a few seconds while the arm rotates around your head. You will be asked to remove earrings, glasses, hairpins and any removable dental appliances beforehand, and a protective apron may be used.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a dental OPG X-ray safe?

Yes. A digital OPG uses a low dose of radiation, and digital X-rays generally need less radiation than older film X-rays. X-rays are taken only when the information is needed for diagnosis or treatment planning.

Can I have a dental X-ray during pregnancy?

Please always tell the dentist if you are or may be pregnant. Routine dental X-rays are usually postponed during pregnancy, and an X-ray is taken only if it is necessary for urgent diagnosis or treatment, with appropriate precautions.

How long does an OPG take?

The X-ray itself takes only a few seconds. Including positioning, the whole process usually takes just a few minutes, and the digital image is available almost immediately.

Does an OPG X-ray hurt?

No. An OPG is completely painless. Nothing is placed inside your mouth except a small bite guide to hold your jaw in the correct position.

What is the difference between an OPG and a CBCT scan?

An OPG is a two-dimensional panoramic image of the whole mouth. A CBCT scan is a three-dimensional scan that shows bone width and depth in more detail and is sometimes needed for complex implant planning or impacted teeth. Your dentist will advise which one is needed.

How much does a dental OPG cost in Gurgaon?

The cost of an OPG depends on the type of X-ray required for your diagnosis. You will receive a clear estimate at the clinic before the X-ray is taken.
